When we say that a jazz band is the way to go for your wedding, it’s not just our opinion. It’s science. According to Dr. William R. Klemm’s article in Psychology Today, What Jazz Music Can Do for the Brain, listening to jazz will improve moods, calm nerves and help people relax. Exactly what you want for your wedding guests – and for a nervous bride and groom.
Here’s what your brain does when it listens to a jazz band:
Music of all kinds has been proven to affect hormones. When we listen to the tones and rhythm of music, our body reacts. Listening to an upbeat, swinging jazz band will cause the brain to release serotonin and dopamine. These are the neurotransmitters that produce happiness and well-being. And, if happiness and well-being simply aren’t enough, the brain also releases norepinephrine – the hormone that causes euphoria. Because jazz is all about tone and rhythm, an expertly selected piece of jazz is uncommonly good at setting the right vibe on your wedding day.
The proof is in the pudding of The Journal of Positive Psychology. A study done by Yuna L. Ferguson of Truman State University states, “the effect [of music] was both self-directed and psychological: participants were told to try to feel happier while either listening to upbeat or neutral music. The upbeat tune listeners came out on top as far as overall impressions of happiness.”
The psychological benefits of jazz should come as no surprise…
Jazz was born in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the swinging city of New Orleans. It has its roots in blues and ragtime, which have roots in African music and spirituals.
